Pilates for the Older Person (including Cancer Survivors)

Course: Pilates for the Older Person

Presented by Dr Marie-Louise Bird, this course will cover the principles of movement using Pilates, contraindications to movement for older adults and basic exercises. It will discuss where Pilates fits into exercise guidelines for older adults and will demonstrate how to design a practical Pilates program for both healthy older adults and for special populations (older adults with pathology, increased falls risk and/or cancer survivors).

Learning Outcomes

1.    Describe the principles of Pilates from a motor control perspective   

2.    Describe and demonstrate twelve Pilates exercises

3.    Describe the goals of twelve Pilates exercises  

4.    Describe the current evidence that supports the use of Pilates in older populations

5.    Describe the current exercise guidelines for older adults within Australia and internationally 

6.    Describe common pathologies associated with aging and the movement contraindications to them  

7.    Be able to teach a basic repertoire of mat and small apparatus exercises to meet commonly experienced needs of older adults, using cues to improve the quality of movement
