Physiotherapy to play crucial role in adding life to years for ageing population: Steve Moneghetti

08 August 2016

One of Australia’s most celebrated athletes, Steve Moneghetti, has joined the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) in the lead up to this year’s World Physiotherapy Day on 8th September to help improve the quality of life for Australia’s aging population.

“I know the importance of listening to my body and using physiotherapists to help me achieve my best,” Moneghetti said.

“I have seen the difference physiotherapists can make, but I am lucky as many people have little understanding of the important role health experts such as physios play in the maintenance of a functioning, strong and healthy body – and I want to change that.

“Physiotherapy can change our quality of life dramatically and it can literally add life to years for our aging population.”

The push from Moneghetti comes after the WHO’s most recent report on Ageing and Health, which highlights the benefits to both individuals and governments in using physiotherapy as a means to ‘add life to years’.

APA President, Marcus Dripps, said that the health of older Australians is one of the most important social, medical and economic challenges facing Australia.

“ABS data shows that more than half of all people aged 65 years and over (56% or 1.4 million) had at least one form of disability lasting - or expected to last - at least six months and which restricted everyday activities,” he said.

“Physiotherapy significantly improves people’s quality of life as they age – keeping them actively mobile through evidence-based treatments that treat and prevent injuries.”

“We want to help keep Australians healthy and active so that they can enjoy every stage of their lives.”

Steve Moneghetti and APA President Marcus Dripps are available for interviews and photo opportunities in the lead up to World Physiotherapy Day on 8th September.
