Musculoskeletal Group

The musculoskeletal group represents APA physiotherapists with an interest in all areas of musculoskeletal practice. The primary role of the group is to provide high-quality professional development opportunities to its members and to advocate at an industrial and political level.

The group is the oldest and one of the largest of the APA’s national groups and has evolved enormously over recent years. Since its conception, when Geoff Maitland and colleagues set out to collaborate with other like-minded clinicians, the musculoskeletal group has been a group that has strived for clinical excellence within musculoskeletal practice. Originally this focused on the finesse of high-quality manual therapies, combined with high-level patient-centred clinical reasoning. In recent years the group has evolved to reflect the changing landscape of musculoskeletal practice.

Now, the musculoskeletal group has embraced the greater understanding of pain physiology, neuromotor control of movement, human behavioural and social sciences, as well as developing a high-quality research culture. Led by its members, the musculoskeletal group is considered a world leader as a professional group within musculoskeletal practice.
