Aquatic Physiotherapy Group

The APA aquatic group is available for all physiotherapists interested in treating clients in a unique environment.

As aquatic physiotherapy can be used as a treatment anywhere a pool is available, it can be used to treat a multitude of different conditions:
- sports injuries,
- post-operative and orthopaedic conditions,
- spinal pain and/or injuries,
- neurological conditions,
- cardio-respiratory problems,
- balance dysfunction,
- women’s health complaints,
- arthritis and aged care.

This enables the group to hold professional development events in conjunction with other relevant National Groups, appealing to a wide range of members.

Ideally, the aquatic physiotherapist should have a knowledge of the hydrodynamic and hydrostatic properties of water, the physiological effects of immersion, and all relevant water safety procedures. For this reason, the aquatic group provides Level 1, 2 and 3 courses to educate aquatic physiotherapists who treat clients in the pool. A Hydrotherapy Rescue course—a course devised by the APA and the Royal Life Saving Society Australia—is held annually in most states and territories.

Capably led by Maureen McMahon, the Australian guidelines for aquatic physiotherapists working in and/or managing hydrotherapy pools (2013) have been released September 21st, 2015. This rigorous and extensive piece of work involved widespread consultation and a formal Delphi process. It is a contemporary extension of the 2002 version of the similarly titled document and will be a key resource for practicing Aquatic Physiotherapists and Hydrotherapy pool managers.
