Momentum to continue in 2018

This year has been an incredibly busy one for the profession and the APA. It’s late October as I write this piece, having just returned from Momentum 2017, our clinical and scientific conference. The experience at Momentum made me again appreciate the importance of the physiotherapy community coming together face to face, and sharing ideas, clinical insights and some great times. The induction of Melissa Locke and Peter Fazey as Honoured Members of the APA was inspiring to me, and many other members present at conference.

t also serves as a point of reflection on the past year. Having staged a successful world-class conference, we have also established a new leading insurance program for our members, launched our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan, run our first truly national marketing campaign, increased our state and federal advocacy efforts and sophistication, and continued to build a contemporary career pathway. It has been a busy year.

There are lots of people to thank. Firstly to our members who have joined or continued their membership journey of the APA; your support is invaluable. About 1000 of you also serve as office bearers on state and national committees, advisory committees or working groups. You all make the APA’s blood pump, and your leadership is critical. I would urge all of our members to join our leaders and get involved actively promoting and driving the profession forward in 2018.

APA members Katie Vine and Marcus Dripps finish their final terms on our Board of Directors this year. They have both been tireless leaders and advocates for the profession and the APA. Their wisdom, passion and drive will be sorely missed around our Board table; however, I know they will continue to be strong champions of the physiotherapy profession for many years to come. As a first-year president, I have valued their unwavering support of me, particularly during some difficult moments. Thank you both for everything.

Our staff often misses when it comes to thanks and recognition. To CEO Cris Massis and his executive team of Craig Maltman, James Fitzpatrick, Elles Vanderkley, Ian Watts, Steve Gosbell and all of our staff across the country, well done on thriving during a year of ambitious growth. Thank you for your commitment and service to the APA.

We have turned our attention to 2018 already. Our efforts will continue to be ambitious, and our advertising campaign mantra of Choose Physio will anchor all of what we do, whether that be education, advocacy, influence or consumer voice.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish all of you and your families a very safe, happy and refreshing Christmas and New Year period. Please join me on the journey ahead in 2018. I know it is going to be ambitious, exciting and successful.
