Exercise and heart failure: what you need to know
Professor Dr Paul Beckers, PhD is a physical therapist and exercise physiologist. He successfully defended his PhD thesis in medical sciences on 'Exercise capacity in chronic heart failure: focus on testing, training and maintenance.
Paul is head of physical therapy at the Department of Cardiology and coordinator of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre at the Antwerp University Hospital in Belgium. He teaches cardiorespiratory rehabilitation to both bachelor and masters level physiotherapy students at the Antwerp University and is teaching in the inter-university course on advanced methods for rehabilitation of cardiovascular disorders for master's level student specialising in internal medicine.
Paul has been involved in the physical rehabilitation of patients with coronary artery disease and chronic heart failure for over 35 years. He is specialised in the treatment of patients with left ventricular assist devices as well as patients before and after heart transplantation. His main focus is on cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and strength training of cardiac patients.
At the Faculty of Medicine, he is active in the translational pathophysiological research group. He also contributed to the design of and actively participation in three large clinical international multicentre trials (SAINTEX-CAD, SMARTEX-HF and OPTIMEX). He investigated the effects of exercise training on CPET derived prognostic markers in the sub-studies of these trials. He has authored 47 peer-reviewed papers published in PubMed, with 1090 citations and an H-index 19.
